Understanding Organic Products for Black Hair – Watch Out for Hidden Dangers

Relaxed or natural, black hair remains that beautiful curly mane you can flaunt anytime. However, without the right care practices and treatments, the hair can quickly become brittle and dry – and you don’t want that! While it may seem like it takes a village to care for black hair, the fluffy, silky and healthy mane you get in the end is completely worth it.

That said, when it comes to natural hair, you are often your own advocate, and therefore must keep your eyes open when it comes to buying organic hair products for curly hair. For one, the natural hair market is flooded with products promising too-good-to-be-true benefits for your hair and more often than not, these products are exactly what they are – too good to be true.

Also, there are several suggestions and recommendation out there over what works for natural hair and what’s bad for it. Truth is, there is no one sizes fits all with natural hair as what works one may do very little or even cause harm to the other, so if you find out a particular product works for you but the “tresses expert” says it’s worthless, do you just junk the product and go with the crowd? Definitely no! If it works for you, then stick to it!

While organic hair products for black hair is certainly the way to go when caring for natural hair, you should be mindful that some harmful chemicals that you avoid may not be on the label.

Did you know that 80% of the popular Black hair products studied contain toxic chemicals that “disrupts” the endocrine system?   According to the Silent Springs Institute study, these products marketed to Black women and children contain multiple chemicals, linked to cancer, weight gain, asthma, and fertility issues. What is even more disturbing is that the study found 84% of the products tested “detected chemicals were not listed on the product label.”  Hair product types were tested across the board from hot oil treatments, anti-frizz/polishes, leave in-conditioners, root stimulators, hair lotions, and relaxers.

Ingredients to Avoid

DEA (diethanolamine) MEA (momethnanolamine) TEA

Not a few body care products contain these chemicals. Aside from being carcinogens, these chemicals can also lead to dry skin and hair, a reason it should not be included in any organic product for curly hair you use. You should, therefore, ensure you read every product before purchase.

Artificial Fragrances

We all want our hair to smell great, and thankfully, there are so many natural ways you accomplish that. You should be concerned with hair products with artificial fragrances.  Artificial fragrances can have chemicals that are drying and harsh on the hair. Your hair will thrive just fine without the extra scents if you practice good hair care routines, but if you really need a scented hair, you can add natural oils with good fragrances to your leave-in conditioner or shampoo.

This is one of the chemical preservatives included in some hair products that are extremely irritating to the skin and eyes. A known animal carcinogen, it can spike the risk of cancers and cause heart palpitations in humans as well. Certain preservatives also release formaldehyde so when shopping for organic hair products for curly hair, also look out for the following:

  • Diazolidinyl Urea
  • DMDM hydantoin
  • Glyoxal
  • Imidazolidinyl Urea
  • Polyoxymethylene Urea
  • Quaternium-15
  • Sodium hydroxymethylglycinate
  • Artificial Colors

Dealing with artificial colors in food daily is bad enough, but you can help yourself limit the effects by avoiding hair products containing these colors. Not only do these colors cause skin irritation, but also they are known carcinogens especially when it contains tar which is another bad news entirely.

An ingredient in so many organic products for black hair, silicones in hair products like conditioners and shampoos only makes your hair look and feel conditioned when all they really do is just sit there and coat the shaft with very little moisture penetrating the insides. Washing silicones out is also a pain and excessive washing may be required to completely get them out causing stripping your hair of vital natural oils. Silicones are the cheap and easy way to get that silken feeling in the hair.

    Retinyl Palmitate

A “gentler” version of retinol (another bad news for natural hair), retinyl palmitate is often included in personal care products in greater concentrations than retinol for effectiveness. Though classed as milder, it still poses the same toxicity threat and has also been found capable of enhancing photocarcinogenicity (increased risk of cancer from UV rays exposure).

Also, another common ingredient included in shampoos, the chemical is able to disrupt hormones causing increased cancer risk. It is commonly labeled on hair products as benzylparaben, propylparaben, etc.

    Polyethylene Glycol

This chemical present in some hair products should have no business with your hair. A key ingredient in oven cleaners, not only polyethylene glycol strip your hair of natural oils, it is also a possible carcinogen.

There you have it, some ingredients you should never have in any organic hair product you use. If any of these ingredients are contained in your hair product lineup, you really should start reconsidering their use.

Benefits of Organic Hair Products For Black/Curly Hair

You did it! You finally rid your hair care supply of bad products, but hey, your hair still needs products to help keep it healthy and also tame those juicy curls/coils. If you are restocking your hair products ensure they are 100% organic and contain no artificial additives and if you’re going DIY, there are several natural alternatives. Below are some benefits of organic hair products for black hair:

    Excellent Long-Term Results

We’ve all seen it happen, conventional hair care products finally taking a toll on the hair after some time. Even before then, it is not uncommon to experience scalp issues like irritation, flakiness and stiff hair from these products.  Your hair is clearly healthier and stronger in a shorter time when you go natural. And also, discomforts from chemicals are non-existent.

    Hair Nourishment

True organic products offer you nourishment; one of the important factors that set it apart from mainstream products. The nourishing benefits are derived from natural ingredients like coconut oil, peppermint, tea tree, rosemary, avocado and a whole lot of other natural products. Although most mainstream products contain these herbs, fruits, and oils, artificial additives often ruin the benefits they hold.

    Safer For Overall Health

Your utmost concern when using any product at all should be your overall health. Your scalp easily absorbs whatever goes into your hair and you certainly do not want any harmful chemicals getting into your organs from these hair products. With good organic products, you have very little or nothing to be concerned about; your hair is safe, well-nourished and you are rewarded with the results you’ve always craved.
